Heidelberg Summer School

"DOING BUSINESS IN EUROPE"

Come spend three weeks studying with us in the student town of Heidelberg -- one of the most beautiful cities in Europe!

What is the SRH University Heidelberg?

The SRH University Heidelberg is one of the few private universities in Germany. This fully state-accredited institution was founded in 1969 and offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees within the fields of Architecture, Business, Engineering, Information Sciences, Law, Social Work, and Therapy. Currently, around 2,500 students are enrolled.

The School of Business currently offers a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Business Administration and in Sport Management. More than 500 students are enrolled.

The 2012 Heidelberg Summer School welcomes international undergraduate and graduate students. Two parallel courses are offered, worth 3 credits each and taught in English. These consist not only of lectures, but also group activities and a variety of exciting excursions to cultural sites, European institutions, and companies in the region.

Course 1: Business in Europe. You will participate in excursions to world market leaders such as SAP, Porsche, and BASF; learn important aspects of the structure of the German and European economy; and gain insights into the key success factors for companies entering the European market.

Course 2: European Society and Culture. This course familiarizes students with the European Union and includes a visit to the EU Parliament. Subjects include history, geography, cross-cultural issues, German and European culture, and even a bit of "Survival German" for getting around town.

Each course will have a mid-term and a final exam. Examinations will differ for undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students will also be required to submit a term paper.

No German? No worries!

Nervous about traveling to a country where you don't speak the language? Don't worry: the Heidelberg Summer School is all in English, and there will be many English-speaking students and staff to help you. In addition, Heidelberg is a truly cosmopolitan city -- the region is geared toward accommodating international business travelers and students.

Of course after 3 weeks of learning "Survival German" in our European Society and Culture course, you just may want to show off your language skills around town!

Duration

  • Session One: June 2nd - June 22nd, 2013
  • Session Two: June 23rd - July 13th, 2013

After the Summer School, you are free to either head home, stay with your new friends in Heidelberg or travel throughout Europe.

Credits

You should be able to receive academic credits at your home institution for the Heidelberg Summer School courses. SRH University Heidelberg will issue grade transcripts for your home university. Please check with your Study Abroad / International Office for details.

Program costs

Costs to the student depend on the agreement between SRH University Heidelberg and your home university. Most students will need to enroll in their home university's summer school in order to participate in this program. Please check with your Study Abroad / International Office for details.

Orientation, supervision and support services

On the first day of class, you will have an orientation session with information about the campus, the city and the program. Comprehensive supervision and support will be ensured by dedicated staff members. Students and their family back home will receive mobile phone numbers for coordinators and staff. In the unlikely case of emergency, you can reach program staff all hours of the day, 7 days per week.

  • Peer Mentors: Summer School students also benefit from the close involvement of German student mentors. This "buddy system" provides visiting students with the added support of qualified peers, who can answer questions and assist with students' smooth integration into university and local life. The mentors accompany Summer School students on all excursions, participate in events, and know the best places to go around town. In this way, visiting students are not outsiders in Heidelberg: they get to experience local culture and student life from an insider's perspective.

Room and board

SRH University Heidelberg campus includes restaurants, cafés and apartment buildings. Housing consists of furnished single rooms (optional double) with bath, with laundry facilities nearby. A meal plan is included and will cover all group meals on weekdays.

Students with disabilities

SRH Heidelberg University has a heritage of educating and integrating disabled persons. Today, 6% of our students have disabilities and participate fully in university life. The campus infrastructure (all classrooms, restrooms, apartments) and services cater to students with special needs. Heidelberg public transportation also supports passengers with disabilities. Please check with your Study Abroad / International Office for details.

Health insurance

Students must have health insurance coverage when studying abroad. Check with your insurance company at home to make sure your plan covers medical expenses during international travel, or you can purchase a special travel health insurance for a reasonable price. (For example, Wallach & Company, Virginia, offers basic $100,000 Medical Expense Benefits for only $7.50/week).

Transportation

For excursions and trips led by the Summer School, we will travel by air-conditioned tour bus or use the fast and efficient German train system.
