Information on the arrangement of items and on search options

The University Library’s collections, available on open shelves and closed stacks, include some 30,000 books, non-book materials (such as videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, DVD-based databases) and loose-leaf works, as well as more than 130 current journals and 9 daily or weekly newspapers. Here you’ll find useful information on how collections are arranged and how to search for items in our library catalogue and catalogues of other libraries.

Literature search

You’ll find the University Library’s media collections in the local library catalogue (OPAC). You can also view your library account, reserve books and renew borrowed items there.

You can access the OPAC (network version) from anywhere, including via wireless LAN and from off campus. If the default setting is disabled, you must first select “Heidelberg” as your chosen catalogue. You can also find tips on how to use this catalogue at SRH OPAC Help.

The list of journals contains the titles of all printed journals available at the library. If you need items that are not available in the local library collections, you can search for books and journal titles in other library catalogues.

SUBJECT CLASSIFICATION & SITE

Classification system

University Library items are classified by subject and topic. You’ll find books on the same topic next to each other on the shelf.

Shelf marks
The exact location of a book in terms of its subject matter and location is indicated by the shelf mark. The first part of the shelf mark (=notation) provides information on the topic of the book. The second part of the shelf mark consists of a serial number, indicating the exact position on the shelf.

Main subject category (e.g. “86” = sociology) | 86/1 sub-category (e.g. “1” = methodology)
70b serial number (position on the shelf)

Journals & newspapers

Journal issues – at least from the current year – are arranged alphabetically on the library’s journal display shelves. The following applies for all journals: they may only be borrowed for 3 days (NO renewal option). You can, of course, use our photocopier or book scanner to create a copy of any journal articles that interest you.

Older journal issues are available in the stacks. If you need such a journal, please let us know at the circulation desk. We’ll then fetch the issue you need from the stacks, which will be ready for collection the next day.

You’ll find the following newspapers in the library’s periodicals reading area:

  • FAZ
  • Handelsblatt
  • Mannheimer Morgen
  • Das Parlament
  • Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung
  • Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • Die Tageszeitung (taz)
  • VDI-Nachrichten
  • Die Zeit

Newspapers are not archived, but are discarded after around 4 weeks. Older editions are archived on microfilm by Heidelberg University Library.
