SRH Academy of Higher Education

Catalyst for sustainable teaching and learning

We want our students to find optimal conditions for learning and teaching at all SRH universities of applied sciences. Our aim is to achieve this in an exemplary and sustainable manner. As the Academy of Higher Education, we are guided by the current recommendations of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat), the Stifterverband, and the findings of research into teaching and learning.

Our study model

We, the SRH Academy of Higher Education, developed our study model – the CORE principle – which is unique in Germany: the aim is for graduates of SRH universities of applied sciences to start their careers with the best possible skills profile and to be highly sought after in the job market.

Recognition from the experts was not long in coming: in 2018, the Stifterverband and the Volkswagen Foundation presented us with the Genius Loci Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Use of digital elements in teaching

We offer a rich portfolio of training programmes, publications, handouts and consultancy services that provide our lecturers with the complete toolkit for teaching in accordance with the CORE principle. Since 2019, we have also been focusing on the provision of training in the use of digital elements in teaching. Our current focus is on targeted networking between lecturers so that they can learn from each other and with each other. This enables our lecturers to act as trusted learning coaches, successfully guiding our students through university.

Further development of the CORE principle

The world of work is in a state of flux – and so are the demands that employers place on graduates. On the cusp of the working world 4.0, future skills enrich the required action competence of those entering the workforce. We are supporting this shift through the further development of the CORE principle: in line with the continuous adaptation of learning objectives in the curricula, we are constantly expanding the range of competence-oriented examination methods and teaching methods adapted to them. The use of digital elements in teaching is an important building block in this respect. Supportive digital and analogue learning spaces provide the optimal framework. Our high standards are underpinned by the embedding of the CORE principle in the University Strategy and in our Guiding Principles of Teaching and Learning.

Support in implementing the CORE principle

Following the great success of the CORE principle at SRH University Heidelberg, we are pleased to share the experience we have gained in designing and implementing our study model since 2010 in the form of training programmes, workshops and consultancy services.

Our five SRH Nursing Schools have long recognised the added value of the CORE principle to their action-oriented training and have redesigned their curriculum to be competence-oriented and in line with the CORE standards. The SRH Academy actively accompanies and supports the colleagues of our SRH Nursing Schools at all locations in Germany in the further implementation of the CORE principle and in networking.

Our SRH Vocational Training Centre Neckargemünd has also embraced the CORE principle. In September 2023, vocational preparation and vocational school, as well as an initial 14 occupations in the areas of vocational training, will start using the new concept. As a groundbreaking management philosophy, CORE will also influence a number of other areas and processes at vocational training centres in the future. Our Academy has been actively accompanying and supporting its implementation and development since 2021.

Student Digital Transformation Agents

Get involved in the further development of our study model! We systematically incorporate student perspectives and innovation into the strategic development of the university. In their role as Senate representatives, two students work with us to conduct student surveys and workshops on selected topics related to digitalisation in teaching and learning. In regular Future Workshops, we develop our vision of the ideal university of the future.

CORE quality and process management

Together with the Quality & Development department, we work to ensure that the high quality standards of the CORE principle are maintained. As part of the quality assurance process in the context of our system accreditation, we introduce the principles of CORE to the educational experts, and support faculties in formulating learning objectives as part of their programme development.

The Hochschulforum Digitalisierung

Learning from the best has always been one of the keys to our success. In 2019, the Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD) selected us and three other universities to take part in its peer-to-peer strategic consulting. The resulting recommendations have encouraged us to continue on our chosen path of digitising teaching and have been incorporated into the University Strategy – so that SRH University Heidelberg continues to be well positioned for the future.
